The aim of this course is to provide a background in several core areas of the study of human language. This course will bridge students’ prior knowledge to the theoretical knowledge of the language origins, features and most importantly the components of language. It includes the study of phonetics and phonology (sound structure and patterns), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (the meanings of words and expressions) and pragmatics (the use of language). Additional topics to be addressed including the primary knowledge of second and foreign language acquisition, Inter-language, social aspects of language and language change.
