The course entitled History of English Literature- 1 examines reading of the major literary events in English history, related to the development of English literature. The course covers the major writers of the period, their significant works and their contributions to the development of English literature. Attention is given to literary and historical contexts, especially on the early and middle periods of English Literature. Many of the writers of this period including our selected writers saw themselves as a part of Renaissance movement that changed the concept of liberty, did a radical transformation of established stereotyped ideas, while, others agonized over the potential for radical destabilization that new concepts of the rights of individuals had accompanied in. Students will be introduced with the concept of early romanticism, humanism of the renaissance, and socio-political condition of that time and they would be able to develop a rich perspective about the relevance of English literature and history side by side.
