The course entitled 19th Century Literature 2 examines reading of major Victorian novelists like Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. Attention is given to literary and historical contexts, especially on the prevailing scenario of Victorian period, such as, urbanization, effects of industrialization, materialism, conflict between science and religion. Students will be introduced with the forms and styles of the writers and socio-political conditions of that time and they would be able to develop a rich perspective about the relevance of Victorian literature in contemporary times. At the end of this course, students will be able to learn about the history of the Victorian period. They would be familiar with the socio-political issues of that time and the forms of the Victorian writers. They will be able to formulate useful questions and cogent arguments about Victorian literature and evaluate current criticism independently.
